“You would not believe my day.” Theo deposits our drinks on the table and hops up onto the tall stool. “I know you’ve had a tough one too. So, cheers to us.” He very carefully picks up his martini glass and salutes me.
“Right back at you.” I take a sip of my seltzer and cranberry. “This is a cute place! You were right.” It’s a narrow, whitewashed room, not much more than a bar on one side and some tables pushed up against the wall opposite, but it’s bathed in sunlight from the back garden, and bustling with the noise of happy-hour drinkers and the Stones on the stereo system.
“I love this place,” Theo says. “Abbot’s. I come here all the time. When you move into the neighborhood you will too! It’ll be our regular spot. We’ll have a regular table, and they’ll always seat us without making us wait. It’ll be so fun!”
“If I move into the neighborhood,” I correct him. “I still haven’t seen this place.”
“Whatever.” Theo rolls his eyes. “I know that building. It’s basically across the street from me. Fancy! You’re going to love it.”
I am excited at the prospect of already having a friend in the neighborhood. It’s almost as much of a selling point as the views Jim talked about. “It’s not me I’m worried about. It’s all about getting Mom and Dad’s approval.”
“They’ll love it too. I’m sure of it.” Theo reaches across the table and takes my hand in his. “I’m glad we’re doing this! It’s so fun to hang out away from the set!”
I nod. “This is just what I needed. I’m glad you called.” It’s true. I was walking back to the train station when Theo’s call came through, and I’m so much happier to be here, in this unassuming little neighborhood restaurant in Chelsea, than on the PATH train, dealing with yet another commute.
“I had to make sure you made it to Dr. Gindi. I might seem nice, but I can play bad cop, too, you know. So you better stay in line.” He wags his finger at me comically.
“Yes sir.”
“Anyway, tell me everything. Was it OK? Did the doctor help you?” Theo swirls the martini ever so slightly, and studies me eagerly.
“Did he help me? That remains to be seen, I guess. He was nice,” I tell him. “But man, they did a number on me. Have you ever been tested for hypoglycemia?”
Theo shakes his head.
“Don’t ever do it. It’s probably the closest I’ve come to torture.” My poor veins throb at the mere memory of this morning.
“That bad, huh? I’m so sorry. He is supposed to be the best though.” He glances around to make sure no one’s listening. “I hear Caroline Gregory sees him.”
“You should see what he gave me. Enzymes. Pills. Hundreds of them.” I reach behind me to the tote bag slung on the back of my chair. I give it a shake, and the clatter of the pills rattling around in their plastic bottles is startling.
